SUBJECT: Change to Advertising Campaign
I have just been advised by our advertising agency of a minor change that must be made to all of our current TV commercials.
The talent re-use contract with the actor who plays the "husband" in our commercials is up for renegotiation next month. Since the commercials were first shot, the actor has become rather well-known for his movie and TV series work and is now demanding an inordinately high fee if we wish to continue running commercials in which he appears.
Given that this particular performer is not inextricably linked to our company or brand image or message, the agency has recommended that we either (a) reshoot all scenes that include the "husband" character using a different actor, yet to be cast, or (b) re-edit the commercials so as to remove the "husband" scenes entirely and lengthen the scenes that remain. We are currently reviewing cost and timing implication for each of these scenarios and will advise you as to our decision within the week. I assure you that in either case the quality of the advertising and its ability to generate sales will in no way be affected.
Please contact me if you have any questions about this impending change.
[BL]* Performers appearing in TV and radio commercials can be a source of unexpected advertising changes. Consider the costs of all possible scenarios (keeping the performer, dropping the performer, reshooting, revising) and the value of the particular actor to your company/brand.
* Assure readers that the advertising's integrity will not be affected regardless of final decision.
